General Information

However set up by the Government Ordinance Number 48/92/M on the 2nd of March 1992, the School of Languages and Translation (ESLT) has its roots well back in the old Procuracy of the Chinese Affairs of Macao set by a Royal Decree in 1905, into which later on the Technical School of Department of Chinese Affairs in charge of training translators and interpreters in both languages was integrated by the Decree-Law 16/92/M, 2nd of March.

Very much since its inauguration, and in line with the very honourable tradition of the institutions it has inherited, ESLT has deepened and intensified the training of translators and of interpreters in Portuguese-Chinese and in Chinese-Portuguese, moreover due to the fact that these two languages were set as official by the Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).

After the Macau handover to the People's Republic of China, ESLT has widened up the scope of its translation teaching, and thus has created a Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation programme in 2000, in view of meeting the growing needs of language training in the Macau SAR.

The following Bachelor Degree programmes are currently offered by ESLT:

              • Bachelor of Arts in Chinese-Portuguese / Portuguese-Chinese Translation and Interpretation
              • Bachelor of Arts in Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation
              • Bachelor of Arts in International Chinese Language Education
              • Bachelor of Arts in Portuguese Language

The pedagogical framework followed by ESLT in teaching Portuguese and Chinese includes one year of cultural and linguistic immersion for the students' foreign language; therefore, those who study Chinese will spend one year in Beijing and those studying Portuguese will have the chance to spend one year of their studies in Portugal. This model aims at enriching a high quality of linguistic and cultural knowledge of the students in both languages, and at this very moment there are about one hundred and fifty students enjoying this hands-in experience.

ESLT multicultural and multi-linguistic tradition is one of its most valuable assets only viable through a highly qualified and experienced group of professors, both native speakers and bilingual in the languages they teach, among others.

ESLT has submitted for evaluation its Bachelor Degree in Portuguese-Chinese / Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Interpretation to the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES), Portugal, and its Bachelor Degree in Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation to the Academic Quality Agency for the New Zealand Universities (AQA). The Bachelor Degree in Chinese as a Foreign Language already in place since the academic year 2016/2017 together with the Bachelor Degree in Portuguese will likewise be submitted for evaluation once a first cycle of studies comes to conclusion.

In order to consistently develop an active internationalization policy, ESLT not only has a set of exchange programmes for students and for research in international networks, but it has also opened several programmes at Maters and PhD levels within partnerships with universities in Mainland China and in Portugal, apart from exchange protocols signed with tertiary education institutions in Australia, in the United Kingdom and in several Portuguese speaking countries, namely Brazil and Cape Verde.
